ASIG is made by Northern Telecom. It was first introduced in 1979. To date, ASIG has been able to interface with such switches as ESS #1-4, Xbar, TSPS, and EAX. The ASIG switch itself is physically smaller than a Xbar switch, and usually smaller than most AXE switches. This is because the ASIG switch is more spread out, as opposed to other types of switches which are all located in one switch house. The use of remote modules give the CO more space to install a Line Concentrating Module (LCM) or Main Distribution Frame (MDF). Many versions of ASIG exist. ASIG versions and systems are as follows:
